txswanie
Just about to clean up a curry poo and saw that there was tiny worms in there. They were white and just thicker than a hair. There were about 5 or 6 in there. I went mad cleaning out the coop/run and surrounding area but didn't see worms in any of the other poops. Anyone know what I have here? Treatment options? Thanks Colette.
hippy chick
They sound like hair worms I'd worm them with Flubenvet.
Chucky Mama
Yep, course of Flubenvet required. Repeat every 3-4 months regardless of whether you see worms or not.
Egluntyne
I seem to recall that Flubenvet isn't available in the US.
Chucky Mama
Ah, you could give them a dose of Panacur in that case.
txswanie
I will give Panacur a try. Anyone know the dosage. I have seen different options from different places. Some say straight down the throat (some of the girls would never speak to me again) some say % of body weight, some say % of food weight. I only have 4 girls, thats a small amount to food daily, therefore a weeny amount of medicine. What about eggs. Is 7 days off ok? Thanks Colette. txswanie
Ok, been on the web looking for panacur granules (I figured in the food would be best) Which is the correct kind to get?. Canine panacur is 22%, goat panacur is 10% Getting very confused about this, sorry worms are new to me. Thanks Colette.
Chucky Mama
Liquid is what is usually prescribed (not licensed for chickens). PM Claret maybe as she uses it for hers. Edited July 19, 2010 by Guest
hippy chick
I use Panacure 1.8mg sachet. I give each chicken a third of a sachet. I mix each dose in a small amount of water and syringe it in to their beaks.
The Dogmother
Liquid is what is usually prescribed (not licensed for chickens). PM Claret maybe as she uses it for hers. Thanks CM. I use Panacur 10% liquid as recommended by my vet (not licensed for use on poultry in the UK) it is dosed at 1ml per kg of chicken, with two doses a week apart. It will need to be shaken as it is a suspension, which separates out easily. I use a child's medicine syringe for administering it. Probably the easiest way to worm chickens Bear in mind though that you will need to adopt a regular worming programme to keep the worm load at a manageable level, especially if they free range. I always treat the soil in their run with a mix of garden lime and either Stalosan or BioDri, although I've been using the new Ground Sanitising Powder of late. txswanie
I think I posted this before but it didn't show up, if it's on twice sorry. Can I use the Safe Guard 10% liquid solution meant for goats? It's the only one I can find in the US. Is that 1 day, wait a week then another dose? When are the eggs safe to eat? Sorry, all this is worrying me. Colette.
txswanie
Sorry, me again. Do you know, sometimes I could cry at how difficult it is to get stuff here in the States. I spend forever on the web trying to find alternatives for the things you guys seem to get easily. I liked the idea of the Ground Sanitizing Powder but searched high and low and think its only in the UK.
Plum
I would check what you have available for horse stables.
txswanie
Sorry to keep on about this but I don't want to get this wrong. I got the panacur 10% (it's for goats) Do I squirt it straight into their mouths? 1ml per kg of chicken. How much does a regular GR weigh? Do I have to get them on the scales or can I estimate? This sounds like a bit of a nightmare. I can see me chasing them with the syringe. If I do it 2 times in 2 weeks when can I start eating the eggs again? Is it ok for the chickens to eat all the eggs in the off period or is that too many eggs for them? Finally, can worms get inside the eggs? I have given eggs away to friends and I am feeling a bit paranoid about this. Thanks Colette.
Egluntyne
If you can 'rest' areas of land on which your chickens graze, it will help break the cycle of many of the worms. Garden lime (calcium carbonate) can help in this, and will freshen the ground up. When I once had to accurately dose a hen I stood on the bathroom scales with her in my arms and then subtracted her weight from mine. I never feed eggs back to the hens during a withdrawal period as there will be residue from the medication in the eggs which will just put more of the meds back into the hen. More about egg withdrawal **here**
The Dogmother
There's really no need to chase them around - wait until they have gone to bed, close the coop door and get your headlight torch on. I estimate the weight of each hen, but then I am used to them and know how much each of them weighs.
lillybettybabs
Where did you get the Ground Sanitising from Claret and can you use it on grass? I move them every two days and keep the grass short not sure if my lot would benifit from it or not.
The Dogmother
You can use it on grass. It is currently sold as part of a worming pack (at your local 'chicken outlet' ) but they are bringing out a bigger size on its own.
lillybettybabs
I shall look out for that, i do strip graze but i'm sure the eggs still build up.
The Dogmother
They do to a certain extent, but they are killed off by UV light so keeping the grass short helps.
