When you say that she has 'had an egg in it for a number of weeks', do you mean that he has felt something? It may well be the gizzard, which is surprisingly low down, and apparently is occasionally mistaken for an impacted egg. Suggest to your friend that he worms his hens, and that he feeds them with a good quality brand of layers pellets, and cuts down on any extras that he might give her.
