Daphne
Following on from Olly and Toots' honey exploits, I have a possibly daft Q. We have a hive with 2 supers on - I've been away and haven't inspected for a fortnight. When we next look, if one of the supers is full would you take it off there and then or wait till Aug/Sept when I expect to do the main harvest? I have another hive with one super on at the moment (I'm guessing it might need a second) and a neighbour has one or two hives as well. Last year this wasn't an issue as we had about half an uncapped super by early Sept!
Olly
If there's any oilseed rape near you, I would extract it straight away. Otherwise, I think it depends whether you'd rather process it a bit at a time, or do the whole lot at once, and when your local honey show (or other opportunity to sell ) is. It might also depend on when you can borrow an extractor. There's always the possibility that if the nectar flow dries up, the bees may take some of it back! Kermit
I went through this dilemma a month ago, but got some good advice from Finman on another forum... Why do you want to spin off the honey? If it is to get some to eat then don't spin it - take out a frame and put a new one in its place. Just eat the honey with a spoon straight from the frame - YUM. One is sat in the kitchen now. Spinning off honey early means you lose a lot of your crop stuck to the sides of the extractor etc. Hope that helps.
