Eggstatik
Hi I'm new here. We've just ordered a Cube and now have to find the chickens to go in it (otherwise our cats have a new summer house ) Has anyone heard of Harco or Garrison as breeds? We live in Luxembourg and have found someone not too far away selling these breeds as well as Sussex. The Omlet site is very helpful with its rating system but I can't find anything on these two. It's not just about the eggs (although I'm looking forward to these) but I'd like to know if these breeds are reasonably friendly and suited to a garden. Any help would be much appreciated. Patricia W
The internet says: Harco This specially developed layer is one of the top egg producers of large brown eggs. The Harco Black Sex-Link is known and used worldwide, and performs well in all types of conditions. Its extensive breeding background shows up in the large and jumbo eggs. The pullets are jet black with a bit of red tinge on the neck and breast. They grow to about 5 lbs. at end of lay. The males are a dark barred colour, similar to Barred Rocks. The Harco's black colour tends to absorb light, so we recommend brighter or more intense lighting for top egg production. ( So it's a Hybrid) Can't find anything on Garrison though.... Patricia W
From what I can gather, in England, a Black Rock would be the nearest we get to a Harco. it seems to have this in its ancestry. I don't know if you get them? Tom123 is one of our best guru's on chicken breeds, maybe he can dig something up. Isn't the internet wonderful!
