chicken run ideas and help please!!!!

Recommended Posts

I think it depends on soil and drainage. Mine were on slabs on clay at the bottom of a hill and when it rained the bedding turned wet and horrid even though it was covered. Dry and fresh now they are on concrete with a think bed of aubiose (hemp horse bedding on top). Lots manage fine with something on top of earth :D

I'm still in two minds over this one. We've had our hens for 3wks now and their run is woodchips on soil. At first it was fine as they just scratched around a bit. However now they are settled they scratch around like crazy some days and in no time at all they can dig down about 8ins and flick soil into the Eglu itself and also block the door so that we have to rake it out to close it at night. We are now considering slabbing some of the run and leaving other parts with woodchips on the soil so that they can still rummage around without totally ruining the run. I would add though that we have 4 hens in a standard Eglu run so space is kind of limited, so that doesn't help :?
