I am so scared - The fox has come again and dug a big hole under the eglu !! Please say they are safe. what do I do ? Will they be safer on the patio where the fox cant dig but then they dont have the grass to play with. Is my only solution to build a big chicken compound on concrete ? I would feel so responsible if they got taken by the fox. OH is going to be mad when he sees the lawn tomorrow.

I would say put them on the patio and weigh the run down well with boulders until you can sort out a firm base. I have all my Eglus on paving slabs for the same reason.

The hens scratch about happily in Aubiose.

Foxes are persistent, so he'll be back.

If you cover the run and then put aubiose down, they'll dig happily in that when it's on slabs, and it's great to clean out. You wouldn't have grass for very long anyway as they kill it fast! You'll also need a skirt round the run so the aubiose doesn't fly around. Also make sure you lock the girls in the eglu itself at night as the run is fox resistant, not fox proof. But you should be OK if you do as Egluntyne suggests.

I agree with PatriciaW - mine (cube & Eglu) are on a patio, with the run covered with plenty of bedding to scratch about in the run. The freerange on grass and I put handfuls of grass in the run at times as well.

The run skirt only makes it a harder job for a fox i.e. a fox would be hard pushed to dig in in a night, so if you are checking and moving run regularly it can be on the grass - I just find they are easier to manage on a patio.
