Hi all,

On thursday I was adding some plastic sides to my WIR to keep the girls warm and dry, but the movement most of dislodged some screws and the 2nd floor fell down, this had the food and water on it (in 25kg and 30litre holders so not small) and I ran straight in sorted it all out. But one chicken (bluebell) was huddled in the coner so I took her straight to the vets (I had to wait an hour because they where halfway through an operating but that was fine as they wherent open anyway so it was good of her to see me) the vet said she was worth a go as she still after the hour had bright eyes and her comb was still standing tall, she looked to have broken egg come out of her vent. She is very lopsided with damaged on the right side but the vet said while examining her that her wing was still working and didnt feel broken, while the foot which is more forward then it should be and slightly angled was working although she doesnt want to use it or stand on it.

 

She gave my anti immflams and pain killers with the idea to see how bluebell goes and it no improvement then well you know

 

She didnt eat thursday but I managed to get her to dirnk using a spoon, Friday night I managed to coax her to eat (mainly corn but I dont care what it is to be honest) and this moring she had a drink and some corn while I gave her a quater of a tablet. I spinkled some corn in yesterday and she didnt move on her legs but kept moving and pecking like a chicken does. She can move but its very slight and not much during the day, she also laid an egg yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrr I wish she would save her strenght but I opened the egg before throwing it away and it was fine no blood or anything.

 

Bluebell is in the kitchen in a very large dog create, so quiet warm and away from the others.

 

Any ideas is it possible to get a chicken xray? if so do you know anywhere in Scotland which does it? I am going to take her back to the vet on monday and see what more she can do, if anything.

PS - the 2nd floor has had major changes and this wont happen again thats for sure, its a freak accident

What a shame. Accidents happen though.

 

Sounds as if you are doing all the right things. I'd keep her on cage rest for a few more days, and perhaps encourage her to eat by making a sloppy porridge from pellets and hot water. It is encouraging that she is making the effort.

 

You might find it easier to get fluids into her by using a child's dosing syringe. They cost about a quid from the chemist or supermarket.

Sorry to hear of the accident. The vet will know what is available for diagnostics. Guess just time will tell if she has other injuries. It sounds as though you are doing the right things.

Sorry about the accident. My vet gave me a few small plastic syringes for giving meds. Might be worth you asking them for a few. I hope she is ok and gets well.

I'd continue with the TLC and give her some time. Any vet can xray her but of course this is just a diagnostic aid, it wont make her better. Taking her in again, having her sedated, xrayed and the associated stress may actually set her recovery back. For me I would only look at getting her xrayed if you feel that her prospects are hopeless in order to make a decision about whether to continue to nurse her. Sending you loads of positive vibes

It wasn't your fault, accidents happen. It sounds like you are doing everything you can for her.

 

Try arnica pillules from Holland and Barratt. They come in a purple or green tube. The 30c dosage is best as stronger. I gave mine 3 tiny pillules a day when she had a bad leg. Arnica helps with bruising, if that is the problem with her legs. Hope she makes a full recovery soon.

thanks for your wishes guys, i have decided to give her until monday for an improvement, i dont want her to be put to sleep but i dont want her to suffer, so it no even tiny improvement late monday, i will take her to the vets and ask about an xray etc and see what she says.

 

i rescued my 3 new ex batts today and wanted a 4th and got asked if i would take a poorly one, so now have 2 poorly hens which dont move in my "hospital wing" ! lets hope they both get better xx
