clucky chicken
Hi everyone - I'm so sad at the moment, I went down to let the chickies out this morning at about 8am and found poor whydid dead on the floor of the house. Don't understand - she was fine yesterday, eating drinking, being her normal bossy self, laying eggs also (actually one of the eggs I collected this morning looked like hers) - so how come she just died? Took her to the vet to have her cremated and they just shrugged and said - well it happens sometime... I'm devastated, I just stood there and cried, it was such a shock - she was a lovely lady, and so funny, the others don't seem bothered that she's gone, and are being their normal selves but what if it was something infectious? majuka
I'm really sorry to hear this. I think sometimes chickens can have heart attacks and maybe that is what happened to Whydid? I'm no expert but if she was acting normally yesterday then hopefully she was not ill with anything infectious and it was just 'her time'. She was obviously a very special girl.x
Christian
Sorry to hear that Clucky chicken. They do have weak hearts and sometimes it is there time for no apparent reason. Just keep an eye on the others, although it is unlikely to be contagious.
hippy chick
So sorry, but at least she didn't have a long illness and die suffering. It must have been quick and in her sleep. RIP Whydid

beach chick
oh dear, sorry to hear that. sometimes they do just die with no apparent reason - because they are prey animals they are very good at hiding any signs of ill-health til the last minute. on balance, it is easier if they actually go that way - I've found one dead in the nest box in the morning, but it was better than the anxiety that goes with nursing a sick hen, especially if the end result is the decision to go to the vet's for the final injection.
