Hi

Now had the chooks for 2 weeks and just want to check on the cleaning of the cube. I am taking the top, sides and trays out and giving it the once over with a scrubbing brush and then a quick going over with a scourer using soapy water. Done this twice now but haven't used mite powder as yet. Once dry I've sprayed it with what looks like a multi-purpose anti-bac spray recommended by the local dealer. Is there anything else I should do? Local dealer did have a mite spray - Should I buy this?

Next - cleaning moving cube & run. Should it be cleaned of poo daily? And how often would you move it? Moved it for first time and the grass is pretty bare. Would you move it more regularly or leave in place longer?

Any help advice appreciated.

Can only tell you what I do. The run is static so can't help you there.

I empty the poo trays daily in summer, twice weekly in winter. Newspaper in bottom so it just slides off. Weekly I wash the bars, trays and surfaces with soapy water or poultryshield in water and let it dry. Dont take sides off just back, nest divider, bars, trays and sometimes lid. Let the parts see fresh air for a bit to kill anything off. When dry I spray with poultryshield and replace and put bedding in nest box. I put some red mite stuff (diatom) in that but don't need it anywhere else having used poultryshield. :D

Thanks for the replies. Plum, I have been cleaning as you are -I haven't taken off the sides - I meant back and lid. I'll look into the poultry shield, so that prevents mites as well? Even though we've only had them a couple of weeks, I'm already planning on incorporating the cube into a larger walk-in-run for the springtime. Haven't told the wife yet. :shh:
