Opinions please from anyone who keeps their chooks in a shed

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Having hatched out 11 chicks this year, it's almost time for them to move outdoors and into their new home having been in indoor rabbit cages until now. I have a large garden shed which is all set on the outside, wood treated and pressure hosed and poultry shield used. I know from various photos of other sheds that the insides of it would be best painted white, the main purpose being that red mite is more obvious, and also it just brightens it up a bit.

I was wondering what everyone here uses on the insides of their poultry sheds? I have heard both normal white paint, and also whitewash (is this still even available any more!) and various different washes that offer some sort of anti-pest benefits  .

I'd love a nice plastic omlet cube, but sadly for me they're WAY out of my price range, especially with the new baby coming soon!!

Advice would be greatly appreciated, and utilised this weekend after I finish my nightshifts :D

I have a wooden house rather than a shed but I haven't painted it inside at all. Mostly because paint can chip after a while especially as I use a silver brillo pad affair to scrub the walls and floors so I didn't want the hassle of renewing it (and maybe having to put the birds somewhere else whilst the paint dried). I just spray poultry shield liberally when I clean and leave to dry and then give them new bedding.

I use wooden sheds, there is so much more room in them and at least i don't have to crawl inside or dismantle it for cleaning. I steam clean them every week and use poultry shield.

In one of my sheds I have painted the inside with creosote and then a few days later I painted the walls with bright pink kid safe emulsion and did the ceiling a blue sky with fluffy white clouds

Its really easy to see any beasties and it hasn't come off when i have been scrubbing it either.

I keep mine in a stable so I guess thats the same as a shed - all I did was paint the inside with Creocote ( a sort of creosote substitute from B&Q) and leave it for a few days before putting my chooks inside so that the smell had evaporated. I would guess that it would have killed off any bugs lurking in the corners! I think its great - you can walk in and clean, spray the ends of the roosting bars with anti mite spray, no crawling around, and my girls seem to have settled in very happily. The best thing is that you can leave the big door wide open all day to give it a good airing - so no smells!
