abwsco
I'd practice with a small square or two first, just to get the feel. TBH cotton is not the easiest thread to use, for the reasons you describe. Have you got a few tag ends of double knitting knocking about that you could practice the basic stitches on? Here is the ripple blanket I am working on at the moment. (Inspired by Snowy at Omletstock) Double bed sized. Already my daughter and my best friend have staked claims. No chance. I manage 2 stripes an evening, and have added 2 more to this tonight. I expect to finish around July. Easiest pattern in the world. Fantastic Instructions **here** That looks lovely No wool lying around as I haven't done anything for years and years so will buy some today if I can. abwsco
Woo hoo. Everything else is just chains with k"Ooops, word censored!"s on. That did make me LOL Think it will be a while before my chains have k"Ooops, word censored!"s on as my tension is to pot and I'm also struggling with holding the wool in my left hand comfortably/properly
Egluntyne
Re the tension, try a smaller or larger needle, depending on if it is too tight or too slack.

abwsco
Am still struggling with holding the wool properly as silly as it sounds The more I think about it the more I think this is why I gave up years ago
craftyhunnypie
Hi - don't give up! I don't think I hold my wool correctly, but it works & my stitches are even & tension is fine too. It took me ages for it to click - but when it did I loved it. Emma.x

Olly
Gosh, that looks fabulous! I've been reading the blog of the lady who posted the instructions for that blanket, I would never have realised that you could make so many different things with crochet. Abwsco, don't give up - I really don't think it matters how you hold your wool, you'll adapt something which suits you in the end - just keep practising those doubles and trebles till it all gets easier. I'd recommend getting an old bit of double-knitting yarn and just practising with that a few times before you actually embark on making something. Let us know how it goes! craftyhunnypie
I always seem to use a 4mm hook with double knitting yarn. It seems to work well. How's the crochet going now abswco? Emma.x

Egluntyne
Update on the Ripple Blanket. It just needs a border round it now. That should keep me amused for a couple of weeks.

Olly
Wow Egluntyne - that looks fabulous! Well done you (how can you bear to give it away!). Anne/abwsco, if it makes you feel any better, I started knitting an Aran jumper over a year ago. I got it out again in about July and undid the six inches or so that I'd knitted, as I couldn't work out where I was in the pattern ... three months on and it's still only about 12" long! I think the friend for whom it was intended last year, will be waiting another winter before it's anywhere near ready.
Plum
Wow Egluntyne that is beautiful. Your bedroom is very tidy. Where are the clothes on the floor, empty cups, half read books, run clips , well thumbed chook magazines?

Many years ago I decided to knit my Dad a lovely cabled cardigan for his birthday. Picked up a piece to check the length and decided it wasn't long enough so carried on knitting loads more. I then carried on without any more measuring. When it was eventually finished after around two years I discovered that it's not a good idea to do knitting when you've had a few drinks as it was nearly knee length on him Bless him, he still said it was lovely.
