Shut or leave door open on eglu? what about the food ?

Recommended Posts

haha, i sleep as nature intended, so my winter morning dash tends to be a very cold one with just a cream dressing gown (again somewhat cat picked) and "chicken slippers" - old slippers i leave by the back door and use only for chickenny ponderings to avoid bringing in the muck to the back door.

In the spring, my 3 yr old hijacked the dressing gown and the string went missing - that was a cold week! :lol::oops::lol::oops::lol: Poor chickens, exposed to me with a flapping gown.... it was quickly replaced with a piece of baling twine.

Baby now due in 5 weeks, I've promised myself a NEW dressing gown when she comes as a present to myself, a big fluffy one for the chicken run now that I have two coops/sheds to open!!

:oops::oops::oops: Oh dear, that would be very embarassing if it happened to me as the fence at the end of our garden is trellis at the top. Elderly neighbour is just about always out there ready to wave good morning to me as I stumble about half asleep in jim-jams and wellies! :lol:

Aaaargh, the leaving the eglu door open to keep Abbie quite is now failing! For the past two mornings, she has started crowing at 6am. This makes me rush downstairs in a panic to get to her before she wakes the neighbourhood. As soon as she sees me she shuts up. Being able to wander around the run until we get up is not enough for her now - oh no, I have to get up to let her out of the run. Don't hear a peep out of her then. :wall::wall::wall:

I give up trying to find a way of opening the Cube without going into the WIR. When I had a look yesterday I realised I would need arms about 3ft long to get from the end of the run to where the handle pulls out :lol:

So this morning I had to try and make a fast exit from the run before the girls could beat me to the door. Luckily they were all a bit slow coming down the ramp. It was like watching 4 OAP's as they slowly waddled down in a little line, bless them :D

:lol::lol::lol: sorry merc...but such a funny image, of u & them!!

I have just closed in them for the first time since had them.. have no idea how they are going to react to it, dare say will be another light sleeping tonight and up early in the morning to let them out.

I must admit it didnt feel right to lock them in but need to try it, the screaching noise I heard last night has me worried. Hope they are going to be ok. Only had them a few days and already a worry wart :lol::lol:

Hi, I tried leaving the door to my cube open last summer and they made such a noise when they came out at 5.30am that I would not do it again. I now shut them in at night but then we do have a lot of foxes and badgers. They are let out around 6.45am weekdays by my OH on his way to work and about 7.30 weekends.

I don't have a problem with vermin. We do however have a pair of collared doves that come down everyday and peck around with them in their run to see what "goodies" they have spare. My girls take no notice of the doves and peck away with them quite happily like they are an extension of their family. :o

My girls had their first night shut in the eglu last night, and I didnt hear any more screaching noises in the night.

I snuck out patio door in my dressing gown at 6.30am this morning, scrambled up the step ladders :lol: , while the rest of the house was snoozing to go let them out. I get hear them flapping about inside the eglu when got nearer.

Let them out, topped up their feed and went back to bed. :lol: snuggled up to hubby who was nice and warm still and I was cold. :lol::lol::lol: he wasnt too happy about that. :lol::lol:

I dont think the girls were impressed with being locked in last night, as once out and had a bit of food, they started making quite a lot of noise. :shock::shock: I started to worry a bit as it was still early and I havent heard them make any nosie this loudly when they have got themselves up this week.

Do you think it was their way of complaining about being shut in. ?

if they're normally left to their own devices with the door open then i'm presuming they wouldn't normally see you this early in the morning? if so then i'd imagine they are just clucking for attention because they know that you're awake & around! if you just ignore them they should get the message that you are not going come back out to them and will most likely drop the habit. *fingers crossed for you* Good Luck! :wink:
