Does anyone have their WIR entirely on soil?

Recommended Posts

Same here (in fact, although we've never met, ANH and I have very similar runs! She designed it, I copied it ... ) slabs around the edge but soil in the middle. It works fine, I dig it over once in a while and dig some garden lime in, but mainly it just has some woodchippings/aubiose on top and they scratch about quite happily.

Mine started that way, but after a nightmare winter of RATS RATS and more RATS :(:(

April this year OH layed a concrete base and we moved the WIR there.

Fantastic no problems now, just spent more money though, didnt really think it through in the first place,

was so anxious to get chooks, thought I could have an Eglu on the lawn and life would be simple :lol:

18 months on £3,000. + ....... plan first as mistakes can work out expensive.

We have put our WIR panels onto a treated wooden base and used a combination of slabs/road scalpings outside the run to ensure no foxes can get in. The inside of the run is fully soil with just 1 slab inside the door. We have had this for about 3 months now and had no problems so far. One friend said we had created a rat run by leaving a small gap between the run and the fence, but with 3 cats, 1 of which is very dedicated to catching anything in the garden, we have had no problems.

OUr eglu and then Cube have been on soil for the past 2.5 years without any problem (touch wood), so I'm not too concerned that putting a WIR on the soil would attract rats anymore than having them on. I do agree about the spirallin cost of our pampered chickens though!
