Water glugs and getting mucky.

Recommended Posts

Are my hens just mucky as I find am changing the water several times a day in the glug (old style one) as they seem to get it dirty very quickly. Is there some knack that havent discovered yet on how to keep it cleaner. ?

I have sited it higher in the eglu run, lower but all to no avail.

Or is this the 'norm':lol: xx

Mine get dirty quite quickly too. What I have noticed is that when you fill them right up the weight of them makes them fall forward which makes it easier for the hens to kick bits into them. Some of my ex batts have started drinking from the super glug and because they drink from underneath it I guess it would be easy to put something over the top so stop anything going inside it. Also the height of the super glug makes it more difficult for them to get bits kicked into them. The hard thing though is getting your hens to drink from them :?

Hi, I'm afraid mucky glugs are the norm. One possible solution is to put them much higher up, but put bricks/steps down in front of them so your chickens can reach.

I say "possible" because even this didn't make much of a difference for my hooligans, who apparently are expert kickers of woodchip. To be honest I gave up bought a hanging drinker last month, which gets dirty too but not as quickly and is much much easier to clean out.

I used to have one of those dome/bell-shaped drinkers, and it got so dirty. I got my hands on two superglugs, and at first worried that they won't know how to, but they took to it straight away. Best invention ever! I do fold newspaper in a long strip and 'weave' it under and over the top, to stop them from pooing in it (I've caught my Barnvelder a couple of times perching on the superglug :? ) Works a treat. If you can, change to superglugs, they are fantastic! I can post a picture if you want :D
