Chortle Chook
I think it may be a question of how much time one devotes to a specific pet. Yesterday I had the day off work and sat on a bench just watching my silkies and to my delight they came up and pecked around my feet and one even made a dust bath right by the the leg of my bench. Before I began work, at various times, I kept hamsters, rabbits and fancy rats and really loved each and everyone, but then I had lots of time with them. These days my dogs are with me in my study all day, every day and of course we go on lots of walks together. They are real partners in my life so I love them to bits. I'm now resolved to spend more time with my chicks. I hate the phrase 'quality time' but I guess that is what it is all about.
Bexibex
I just adore my girls - I have had them since July and they are such characters. I never thought I would love them so much so quickly but they are just wonderful. I dread losing any of them and being ex-bats I know I may not have them for as long as younger hens. It will break my heart. I have three cats and a dog and I love all of them so so much. I have more of a bond with the cats and dog but love the hens just as much. chickiepiggies
yes yes yes i love my chickens i would probably go with out food if it was a choice of them eating or me! i've just had some new chooks and they are so small and cute and i'm worrying about them 24/7 i love my cat also he thinks he's a chicken sometimes its so funny seeing him drinking from the glug and sitting in the WIR with the chickies just pecking away around him he's such a character But it was definitely the ex-bats that stole my heart, when i got them they were just meant to be for eggs but after a week i didnt care if they laid or not i loved them. i definitely shed lots of tears of all 3 of my ex-battys sadly all 3 are in the coop in the sky
Bexibex
I'd have mine live indoors like Cats if I could a House Hen I would so love that. I've seen pictures of people's hens in their houses and I can't understand how they manage it. Hens are pooing machines. If I could design a hen nappy then they would all be sat with me, my OH, the cats and the dog in front of the fire!

Bexibex
Oh my goodness - I thought I had seen it all. My girls would think I was mad. Plus until they grow their feathers back, there would be nothing to attach it to. It's got me thinking now......
majuka
Totally! We've had eight girls so far (three at present) and we've loved each of them and mourned them terribly when they've gone. It is a totally different relationship to that of our dog, who we've had for six years, lives in the house with us and comes on holiday with us but we do love them certainly. I would love our girls to be house chicks - that would be so much fun!! They have spent a few nights in the house in their carriers, when it went down to below -10, also when we have fireworks round here, it's unbelievable. They also come in when the family a couple of doors down have one of their bonfires late at night and then they go to bed when it is still burning. One spark and our coop would be gone. I joke to Dave that they would look very sweet lined up along the bottom of the bed!
