I have a friend who is looking to me for help with one of her chickens...

 

She says her girl is lowering her chest to the ground, walking backwards a few steps, righting herself and repeating.

She is going away tomorrow first thing until Sunday night and has a neighbour feeding her girls.

 

Your thoughts please.

Is she sure she's not just looking for bugs and scratching ? Sounds like a normal movement to me but she presumably thinks it's not normal or she wouldn't be concerned.

I read on another forum that a hen had a foreign body in the eye which then lodged in the sinus and the hen displayed this behaviour. She said one day it suddenly started walking forward.

I have a cochin that does this a couple of times a week and I've always wondered why. She has done this since I got her in April and is fine in every other way.

 

I've always assumed she just had a loose screw.

Maisie does this. It's sort of like a chicken moonwalk. It looks really funny but I've read it could be neurological. As Maisie has done this since she was running round the kitchen at 4 weeks old I'm not too concerned, particularly as in every other respect she is normal and healthy and appears to be quite intelligent (she comes to clicking fingers). I'm inclined to think it may be some sort of brain spasm or fit of sorts when she gets over stimulated, if it is indeed neurological, as she is freeranging when she does it.

My friend took her two girls to the vets and apparently there is nothing wrong with them...she thinks they were 'faking' it
