jill the potter
It's been 5 weeks since we got Margot & Barbara. They have been kept separated in the WIR with their own sleeping quarters and fed their rearers pellets on one side of the fence opposite Tikka and her layers pellets (we lost Korma a couple of weeks ago) So I thought this week it was about they met face to face. I undid the partition and the little ones just sat there until I ushered them out. Tikka made a rush at them and then...............nothing. She just walked off !!! She did run at them a couple of times after that but just to let them know who's boss. Margot and Barbara then went off to explore the great outdoors while Tikka decided to look over their part of the WIR and promptly started using their dust bath (almost like making her mark!!) 10 mins later Margot and Barbara were sat on the edge of the tyre dust bath, quite relaxed, watching Tikka. (I wish I'd had my camera!) Now I'm not saying there wont be trouble at some time, but I'm so pleased that this part has gone so well. I intend over the next week to get the new ones onto layers pellets, start introducing them to the eglu at night and then hopefully we should be all done within the next two weeks One other thing is that since Korma is no longer with us and OH has a strict 'one in, one out" policy I feel we really have to get another girl The question is will I have to go through all this slow introduction if I get a girl the same age and from the same place as Margot and Barbara
Plum
Congratulations they are doing really well. Yes my OH sent me for one more but somehow got one 'Morehen' well you can't get just one can you and they need a friend. Tell him when you get home
Purplemaniacs
I think the introduction process for a single girl is even longer, if you have the space get two more on the grounds that it is easier to introduce two than one Chrissie
Egluntyne
I'd overrule your OH and get 2. Intros are best doen slowly in my opinion, and any new hens that you get will be outsiders. 5 weeks is a longtime, and any new hens won't be remembered by Margot and Barbara, even if reared at the same place. jill the potter
I would dearly love another 2, but can I feasibly get 5 in an eglu. Seems a bit crowded with 3, and as Ieave the eglu door open there's always some poor little B who is left perching by the open door!!!! Ain't Nobody Here
I've had 5 in an eglu (and now have 6 ). Having said that, no-one sleeps in the eglu and only one is currently laying so it's not exactly over-crowded .

Snowy
I had a hardy bunch who slept out side all last winter! Introductions are definitely easier the more you have (I'm just introducing 4 to 7 - they are together at night, but seperated through the day). There is very little violence, it's all vocal with my lot!
