Noticed Something - chicken welfare

Recommended Posts

I am startled that we are all beginning to notice that the rate of which chickens are so badly looked after now is rising.

I must say the amount of things i see about battery hens and people shooting chickens and even people stealing them is getting to an unbelieveable point. My friends had their beautiful favorelle breeding trio stolen after only owning them 4 days themselves!

This seems to be an epidemic and I must admit I am getting rather worried.

Unfortunately I think it is a sign of the times we live in.

If someone can steal chickens from a back garden/allotment then they can get a bit for the meat. Cheaper than buying it at a supermarket.

With more and more of us keeping chickens the more choice burglars have. Then also if more people are keeping chickens then more will be breeding and then not understand their responsibilities regarding dispatching or rehoming the cockerels. I think some people may not realise that 'releasing them to the wild' might not be the best thing.

Horribly I bet the same problems are there with all animal ownership.

I also say this as at college we had 15 pekin cockerels dropped off we don't know who put them there. Just left them luckily we have a HUGE batch of female pekins coming in soon so we can pair them up. But it makes me sick.

I have paddlocks on everything. And a doberman.

Well I am the most knowlegable student on chickens and the college knows it that is why we are getting the female pekins. But I didn't know what to do with 15 cockerels. I don't keep them so I struggled but luckily they are in good condition just a bit scare at the moment. But being with students everyday will help.

Snowy I am studying Btec Pathway in Animal Management.

And Redwing we have 2 homes lined up :) A Milliefleur and a Lavander are going to the same home with some very pretty black hens that the owners already have and. A trio of blacks are going to go back with one of the teachers :)

It is a good course. Just when I got there they had just had a fox kill their cockerel :( Apparently he would just follow you around scratch near you and roost in with the Kune Kune pigs. But he wondered too far :(

Which college are you at? :D

Ditto, sounds like the one in our village. They had a cockerel killed by a fox not long ago , and have kune kune pigs. Will have to ask if they've had an increase in pekin cockerels
