Does anyone have any ideas for winter treats for two hating the cold 18week old orpingtons. Thay'll eat grain(which i know is important) but they seem to be sitting down alot. I'm putting this down to weather as when suns out they're full of energy. I've read scrambled eggs is good for them and porridge made with grain but how would i do this?? Want to spoil them abit but thay don't like s"Ooops, word censored!"s from kitchen or meal worms much. Dave tried corn but it seems too hard for them. Any ideas would be great

I have been making mine porridge with just normal porridge oats and water and they love it! in fact as soon as they seem me in the morning they start pacing and shouting!

Don't like meal worms????????????? Mine will do back flips and somersaults for them!

 

Porridge with normal oats and warm water with a few raisins in it before bed helps keep them warm.

I know , my ex-batts were the same but these girls just eat a few and walk away . I only had to shake the tub and they'd come running Maybe they are abit young yet?

I am going out to give my hennies oats and warm water now! i can also see them trying to grate themselves through the run! lol

Mine have their normal food soaked in warm water, They think it's the bee knees .

 

They also get mealworms, corn on the cob, mashed boil egg, spring greens and porridge.

I have just given mine an 'end of worming' treat - I made pellet porridge (pellets, warm water, crushed eggshells, bokashi bran, poultry spice as some are moulting, garlic powder, limestone powder) and stirred in some chopped up spinach and celery...........will keep them busy for a while!

Yes, it is recommended by Barbara of omlet, particulary good during moult, make it with water not milk.

My chooks also love their mash and/or pellets with the usual poultry spice, bokashi bran and garlic added, mixed with plenty of warm water until fairly runny, with some cooked peas and sweetcorn. They have this every afternoon in the winter.

As a special treat I thow in a few raisins or mealworms. Long suffering Hubby [aka enpekt] always thinks I've got his dinner on, only to be told it's for the chooks.

Our girls love sunflower seeds & mealworms the most. Agreed live mealworms are the best as they go so crazy over them they lose their manners!

Since 2 out of the 3 started laying their appetite is pretty astonishing!

Some really good ideas here, thanks! I've already tried giving the girls some oats soaked in boiling water (I'll just let it cool down until it's just a bit warm), nothing like a warm porridge to keep them warm.
