winter treats

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any ideas for winter treats for two hating the cold 18week old orpingtons. Thay'll eat grain(which i know is important) but they seem to be sitting down alot. I'm putting this down to weather as when suns out they're full of energy. I've read scrambled eggs is good for them and porridge made with grain but how would i do this?? Want to spoil them abit but thay don't like s"Ooops, word censored!"s from kitchen or meal worms much. Dave tried corn but it seems too hard for them. Any ideas would be great :D

I have just given mine an 'end of worming' treat - I made pellet porridge (pellets, warm water, crushed eggshells, bokashi bran, poultry spice as some are moulting, garlic powder, limestone powder) and stirred in some chopped up spinach and celery...........will keep them busy for a while! :D

Does anyone know if its okay to give hens ready brek?

Yes, it is recommended by Barbara of omlet, particulary good during moult, make it with water not milk.

My chooks also love their mash and/or pellets with the usual poultry spice, bokashi bran and garlic added, mixed with plenty of warm water until fairly runny, with some cooked peas and sweetcorn. They have this every afternoon in the winter.

As a special treat I thow in a few raisins or mealworms. Long suffering Hubby [aka enpekt] always thinks I've got his dinner on, only to be told it's for the chooks.
