Picture the scene - surburban garden at 7am this morning - there I am in the dark filling the glugs before letting the girls out - small ginger cat at my side.

Along the side of out gargage is a passage where we store go carts, pots, lawn mower etc and it is blocked off the to stop chucks legging it onto road.

Suddenly - there is the sound of banging and crashing as something makes its way down the passage. The cats hackles rise and a small growl is heard from him, I can hear my heart pounding in my ears. What is it ? .....................

Dunno - at this point so worried as to what might appear - I shouted "go away" and whatever it was it legged it back through the junk just as loudly behind our garage. cat and I sighed with relief. I suspect if was either next door but ones tom cat cat a large magificent beast or a fox - whatever it was it made one helluva din in the early morning. The cat and I were transfixed with terror for a minute - if Freddie Kreuger had appeared I wouldnt have been surprised.

Just in time for Halloween! One night before I was married and still living with my folks and watching TV very, very late. The cat had been asleep on the settee across the room. Next second she's leapt out of her sleep onto the back of my armchair and growling and hissing at the corner of the room behind the TV. Tail spiked and back arched. She wasn't having a go at me and I jumped up and stood behind her. I also said "go away" and she relaxed and went back down to the floor. That really made me scared. Of course it would have helped if I hadn't been watching some old horror movie at the time. I think she might have been dreaming and perhaps hearing my voice calmed her down. But I didn't have the crashing and banging sounds to accompany it (and I don't think it was a film with clanking chains either - probably the Quatermas Experiment or some such), like you had.

OOOOOOH SCARY INDEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very scary! I would have been freaked out too.

Your story Valkyrie reminded me of an incident with our old cat. I was living in a house with my then bf (now hubby). I was watching X Files, all on my own, with a fast asleep cat next to me, when all of a sudden she started growling and had her hackles up. I was petrified for about a minute until I remembered my bil was upstairs in the shower, and that was what she had heard  I do get freaked out quite easily and can convincingly convince myself that 'that noise' was someone outside my bedroom, probably with a weapon of some sort, about to attack. Of course, its just the water running though the pipes as the dishwasher is on downstairs :oops:

All quiet on the western front this am as me and same cat went thro motions of filling glugs and sorting washing out of tumble drier. I firmly believe animals sense things more than us. Despite being a coward I firmly believe in protecting me and mine however a knife welding Jack Nicolson or the guy from pscycho would have me running into kitchen and baracading myself in
