How to stop chickens escaping over 5 bar gate

Recommended Posts

We have 4 lovely omlet girls, 3 of which would not think of flying over the gate, who we have had since mid August. The mad one (a ginger nut!) named Cluck would and it is only a question of time when she is free ranging and my attention is diverted, she will escape over the gate. Any ideas please? We use the gate daily, so need something which can either go over the top of the gate still allowing the gate to be used by both the postman and pedestrians and allow vehicular access. Or a fence infront of the gate that I can put up when the girls are out free ranging. The gate is straight onto concrete. Cluck has her wings clipped, but is still mad!!! She loves flying down the cube steps in the morning....far more fun than walking down them. Thank you.

They like flying up onto something solid and then jumping over, rather than helicoptering over, so if you can put something along the top of the gate that she can't get a grip on or land on, you may win the battle. I have poultry netting which is less than 4ft high which mine don't get over, but they can easily get over the 4ft+ high post and rail fencing.

Thank you everyone for your help. It is very much appreciated. Cluck does only have 1 wing clipped, but is still very good at flying and persevering. The other day she attempted to fly to the top of a 5 ft wall....when she realised she would struggle, she stuck her beak in the brick wall half way in mid flight to help her!!! She I am pleased to say, failed this and went for a lower down section of the wall. We are going to buy some fencing to stick on top of the gate which won't be such an attractive landing pad. Thank you again for your help.

Take a look at my flickr link; my Bluebelle could jump onto the front of the cube run and from there she could get over the wall onto a busy road. My OH got a piece of flexible pipe and threaded it through the bars, from this he tied pieces of string with bolts to at weight and attached tin foil. It acts like a scare crow and she hasn't tried to jump up since. You could used bottle tops instead of tin foil. It looks a bit like a bus or train from India but does the trick.:lol::lol:
