Just received my order of Natures Grub Chicken Seed & Insect mix. The insects looks fab (from a chickens point of view ), but I was wondering about the seeds in there. There are proper big shell-on sunflower seeds. Can the chickens eat that? I can't quite imagine how they would cope with those? It is just for the odd treat and not in huge quantities. Any thoughts appreciated!

They can eat sunflower seeds, but as they are very fatty they are best only given as treats.

They can cope with teh shell on the sunflower seeds but you will probably find that some wont eat them and others will

One of my girls ate a whole mouse once so I reckon a shell on sunflower seed would slip down okay!

i'm still tempted to sit and pick out most of the sunflower seeds!

I think they can eat pumpkin seeds (a natural wormer?) and pumpkin seeds are bigger than sunflower ones.

Mine eat sunflower seeds with no problem and they love them.

My sunflower plant flopped over without me really noticing - the seeds never stood a chance against 3 chooks...

 

Had kept the sunflower for the seeds for the wild birds - but they have missed out big style!

 

The chooks also love squash seeds and melon seeds - not everyday! - but they are all eaten with relish when treated.

Oh OK, I will leave them in I just had visions of blocked crops. Anyway, I gave them a handful this afternoon, and they loved it! I bought a big tub and I think it will last me ages!
