blackadder1st
Morning We went out one morning and Martha came out with the others as normal, but later in the morning we noticed she was just sitting in the run which wasn't like her (she was once of the top end of the pecking order!). When we picked her up and tried to put her down again, she just lay there, not moving. We brought her inside to isolate her from the others in case it was something (we'd lost one of our others the week before) and since we're in Scotland and very open to elements we didn't want her getting worse. We suspected a broken wing or a sprain or something so we tried to restrict her movement as much as possible. Anyway, this was a couple of weeks ago and she eats and drinks fine, but her crop is withered to almost nothing. She tries to move all the time, flapping around using her wings instead of her legs. As much as she won't stand on them, if you turn her over on her back and 'cycle' with her legs she pulls back with great strength. She occasionally has 'spasms' where she closes her eyes while pecking at food or water, throwing herself from the neck upwards to the floor for a couple of seconds. She also makes squeaky noises, almost like distress, sometimes when she moves, or if you pick her up to move her. Her poo is normal, very often and stinky! Any ideas anyone? I've just read about limestone flour, so we'll probably try and get some of that. We've also tried giving her a bit of marmite daily to build up her vitamin b. We just want her to get better and be with the others again. Cheers Allan
Plum
So sorry must be difficult to see her. Is it in her interests to carry on?
blackadder1st
We have thought of putting her to sleep, but she seems so determined to try and is trying so hard to get back on her feet that it would feel wrong to right now. Every day she seems to be making some improvement so we are hoping that she does recover. Would love to be able to put *happy update instead of the other one ... Plum
Have you tried the vet's opinion? I think if you are keeping going I would feel uncomfortable keeping her like that unless I knew I'd got expert opinion. It could be peritonitis which they could drain although it's a short term solution. If its a deficiency she's got they could possibly give her something that would work quicker. You say she's making squeeky noises when moving which could be just grunts of effort but it could also be pain. I know how you feel because when I have had one unwell and put lots of effort into caring and nurturing for them you want to keep trying and it is oh so hard if they have to go with or without help. It is absolutely heartbreaking and so much worse than if you lose them suddenly. I really, really hope it is curable and hope that things turn round. Chucky Mama
You could try a calcium supplement such as Zolcal D or limestone flour (need to give with Cod Liver Oil). It will however take some time to have an effect. I personally would advise that you take her to the vets as there may be something causing her not to walk that is not related to her legs. sandyhas3chucks
sorry.... am I the only one shocked that she has not been seen by a vet, poor little soul!
beach chick
I agree with sandy - you really need to get her to vet pronto.
The Dogmother
I agree with the others, she needed to be seen by the vet at the outset. Personally, I agree with Plum as to the outlook; if she were mine, I'd cull her as her quality of life can't be great.
Egluntyne
I agree too. She needs to be seen by a vet or you need to despatch her yourself as she is clearly in distress.
