Raina
Hi all, Has anyone ever used a as a Broody? We were thinking about hatching some more chicks maybe next year? We would like to do it the natural way next time round and was thinking about letting Orakiah go broody? (Leave rubber eggs in the nesting box for her to see if she'll sit )
Griffin
None of my hybrids have ever shown the slightest inclination for broodiness. I've read about a couple of hybrids going broody but it really is unusual.
jon888
My speckled hen florence is currently sitting on 6 eggs for me. It was unexpected though as hybrids have had that trait bred out of them. I have read that silkies make excellent broodys. An excuse to buy another chicken? or two for integration purposes. I have convinced my OH that is for the best to re-integrate florence to the others at the same time as 2 other chickens....just to spread the attention. Egluntyne
I've had success with hybrid broodies several times. However, they'll only go broody if they have a mind to.
Steve the Gas
It's hormonal typical so enticing her to lay - wil not work. You need a silkie - they go broody at the drop of a hat.
Madchook
I have one at the moment I do wish she would snap out of it-out of all the chooks I have, a when the days got shorter and the temp dropped, was the last thing I expected! None of my others have shown any inclination what-so-ever before and I don't think you can make them sit? Belle is perfectly happy to sit on nothing, but she does poach the others eggs if they lay before I have turfed her out
Roobaloo
One of my hybrids is a regular broody...but she's not an obsessive sitter. She will be broody for days, then have half a day off the next...then repeat. So she'd be no good for hatching!!
Mars
I had one hybrid who used to go broody, she was excellent mother, the hybrid I had was the brown one you get in ex-bat, but hybrids don't get broody and you can't do much about it, if you have an incubator watch when one of your hens get broody put eggs in the incubator and put the chicks under her when they hatch, that is my favourite way of hatching
Egluntyne
Hybrids do get broody. all of my broodies have been hybrids. My pure breeds are too posh, apart from the Pekins of course.
NatalieC
I've got a light sussex who gets broody - she's hilarious when she does as she gets so cross when I lift her out - don't know what the neighbours think!
