Nacktschnecken omlet Cube

Went out this evening to check that Gypsy and Chilli are well tucked up in the cube hoping the morons with the fireworks will not frighten them too much. Sadly found Gypsy had passed away. Almost certainly within the last hour.

 

We're all very sad of course but I'm also wondering how Chilli will manage now she is on her own. We'd wondered just a few weeks back about adding to our "flock" but not come to any decision. Slightly worried now that she might get bullied by incomers.

 

Any advice?

Sorry for your loss. That must have been a shock for you.

 

Chilli will be alright on her own for a few weeks as long as you give her lots of your company.

 

If you look at the 'introductions' topic I think there is something covering single hens.

 

If I was doing it I'd get 3 more hens, keep the new girls quarantined for a week or so then take one of the new girls and put her in with Chilli. When they are happy together introduce the two sets of two.

As will all things there are many ways of doing these things. How old is Chilli?

Very sorry to hear about your chook.As ive never been left with just 1 hen l could not advise you on that part as l have 11 hens and or tho l have got down to 8 have not had just 1 hen.Hope your lone hen gets some friends soon....

Chilli is approaching 3 years old.

Do sort yourself up with a quarantine area, there have been an awful lot of posts on here from people who have bought new hens that have turned out to be ill

When one of my two died, the remaining on started to 'get depressed' within a few days - wouldn't come out of the eglu - so it can vary.

Just keep a close eye on her.

Thanks for the advice.

As it happens Hazel, remaining chook (Chilli) has stayed in Cube nest area today. Bad storms last night and pouring down this morning so she might just be being sensible. Hope so.

 

Am now thinking about how to partition run area (6' x 9') to allow quarantine.
