Fascinating Forum!

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm new to chicken keeping but rehomed our 4 ex-bat girls a fortnight ago. They are lovely, getting cheekier and more confident by the day. In the weeks leading up to getting them and especially ever since they arrived, I have spent quite a bit of time happily looking through the posts on some of the pages and learning loads about how best to look after them and what potential problems may crop up. Just wanted to say what a fabulous mine of information this forum is! :)

Kim :-)

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on getting your ex-batts.

It's a great place to get your questions answered, whether through the FAQ or by posting directly, there's lots of friendly help on here.

We do like a picture or two ... And I'm intrigued by the 'adopted Highland cattle'!

Hi there

Thank you!

I've been trying to add a photo of one of the girls but I'm having problems doing so -it seems the jpeg has too much memory?? I'll keep trying!

The adopted highland cattle are a mix of ones that I see and feed while walking my dog - one fold belongs to a lovely farmer but the others are kept by the owner of the estate where I walk and are there for tourist purposes only and left to fend for themselves totally. :-( The nice farmer tolerates me feeding his crowd titbits and in return when they escape from the field from time to time and I see them, I ring him up to tell him!!!! :D

Welcome, Kim. It's a very good forum, I have ex-barn chickens and a wooden coop, but still there is a lot of advice and here for a non-eglu owner. Y

ou'll find other parts of the forum will start exert their pull, too. I am now off to make some more paradise slice from a recipe I got off the all things lovely part of the forum.

Hi

Thank you for the replies - much appreciated.

I got my girls during the half term week and then was off work unwell for the best part of 2 weeks so saw lots of them. Last week when I was back to work I really missed them and I had a CPD course after school the first day back so they were tucked up in the Eglu by the time I got home and I was under strict instructions to leave them be as they were settled - I was most miffed! They are getting so cheeky and are desperate to get out and explore beyond their run. Next weekend I am going to brave the wing clipping and net off part of the garden for them to take over! :D

Hi there

Yes, same highlanders!!! Long story attached to them too..

Glad Ethel is feathering up now - our Poppy was a bit like that then she started to moult even more. They are getting some supervised free ranging now and they love it. I think we have made a rod for our own backs now with the daily treat tray which is twice daily really as they get half in the morning and the rest in the late afternoon and eggs are now few and far between, partly I've been told because they are not eating the ex-bat crumb in the same quantities... Oh well, they are enjoying life so who minds about the eggs!! :D

Kim :)
