heat and light in the aviary

Recommended Posts

Hubbie announced this morning that he would like to put heat and light in the aviary for the chooks for over winter.

Now they have survived ok so far and lived fine through the horrid winter last year, so I think he is going to far, but I am ready to be corrected. Does anyone do this? If so can we have recommendations please?

Thanks

Extra heat isnt needed but if the run is exposed then tarps down some of the sides would help keep it sheltered and dry. Making sure your chooks go to bed dry is the main thing. Heat in the run would be largely wasted and heat in the coop could cause problems - hens suffer far more from being too hot than too cold

Light to extend the day is only necessary if you want to have more chance of getting eggs out of pure breeds over the winter - opinions on this are divided - some say its a good thing others like to give their hens the natural break

Light to see your way and tend to the chooks after dark is very useful though!
