In praise of good builders

Recommended Posts

My house was extended 3 times before we bought and has some eccentricities as a result. One of these was door from an upstairs corridor onto a flat roof. I've asked our builders to brick it up and even though no one would see it as it is on the side they have salvaged bricks from a wall on flat roof that I'd asked them to knock down so they get a colour match and the brickie has carefully knocked out alternate bricks on the edge to fill in perfectly. They only way you'll be able to tell it was filled in is the standard of his brick laying is better than the rest of that extension

TBH I really wasn't expecting that level of perfectionism

We've had these guys do a previous job and wanted them back because they are nice guys and their carpenter is brilliant but obviously he's not the only expert - the previous job didn't need any brick laying so we didn't see the brickies work before.

That's brilliant. It is difficult to find good, reliable tradesmen, and recommendation is usually the best way.

I've just had builders in putting me an off road parking space in next to my cottage, and I'm thrilled with the result, so much better than my expectations. They were so efficient and clean and tidy. They were actually my neighbours so was a bit worried in case things went wrong, but they didn't and my little Landy is so much happier parking right next to the house!

The main builder is a friend of a friend and I got to know these guys whilst they were building her an extension so I saw they did good work and were also nice honest guys to have around. Last time when they were working in the main part of the house I genuinely missed them when they had finished.

I do try and always go with a recommendation and as a consequence can take months (years sometimes  ) before getting a bit of work going. We've only had two bad experiences. Kitchen designer making mistakes and not admitting them or putting them right (builders above solved most problems by tweaking design as they went but I still don't have a soln for my floor) & company that fit stove and fireplace took ages and charged over the odds - although it looks fabulous it cost more than their quote in sneaky ways that were hard to combat.

Whereas our experience with builders, getting sofits replaced, the masses of plumbing work we've had done on this place and the guy that's been replacing our fence have all been really positive.

Which reminds me I must get the fence guy back for the last section - a 200ft garden has a lot of fence

I wish I COULD get workmen in,but as you know he does it all himself

Which is fine - he does a great job,but its getting him to do it that's the problem.

You should see the living room - paint swatches everywhere,a big nasty damp bit that need treating & I still have things to be put up on the walls too.

ps: don't tell him I said this - he really will go on strike :lol:

I have a similar problem with the work OH does do himself. He does a great job but becuase he's a perfectionist it takes a while and he has no spare time anyway (and because he is good at the jobs he is so fussy about who we get in to do work).

Now I have walls knocked down upstairs in my bedroom I have electrical cables dangling from the ceiling where the walls used to be and they will stay like that for a while  And of course because we always want to use the same plumber who is busy I have a couple of radiator pipes sticking up in the new doorway (I've had to put a waste paper bin upside down over one to stop me taking the skin off my shin.

I've been waiting for my walk in chicken run for two years now (Maybe I need your OH to quote for building me a lovely run like yours  )

& I still have things to be put up on the walls too.

I have 10 pictures sitting in the hall to go up, they've been there for weeks... I don't think OH likes them so I'm trying to think where they can go where I can see them and he can't  I have a large map for my study I bought 5 years ago still waiting to go on the wall except I don't need it anymore :(

my builder was supposed to start on my kitchen on monday, so i emptied it on saturday (was out all day sunday) then he said he wasn't coming till thursday... now friday... so i am camping in my loung but things keep trickling back into the kitchen.

and what bugs me most is that i KNEW this was going to happen! my OH and my dad were both builder so i know how it goes. but even so, I am still miffed!
