I already had all the stuff I needed lying around so they won't cost anything. I made a flower stencil, stuck it to an old, clean jam jar and used etching cream to make the design. Next stage is to make a wire hanger for around the neck, like this http://www.twelve22.org/images/jarcandle.jpg and hang them round the garden in the summer with citronella candles in them, pretty and functional. And FREE! Well, in the sense that I didn't spend any extra money to make them! I'll make a few and maybe stick some beads in the centres of the flowers, depends what's knocking around the house. It took ages making the stencil so i think for the next one I'm going to use my electric engraver which i used to make this ages ago http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1655936&l=3d93579c4e&id=568396756 you just print an image off the net, stick it to the inside of the jam jar and engrave on the outside. Can't you get a pen-like thing for etching? etching is done with acid, engraving is done with either a pen like thing or a drill like thing. You can also sandblast glass but that's for the professionals. I use glass etching cream and I have a small electric engraver, bit like a dentist drill. I started off with a pen like thing but it takes ages and makes your hand hurt. Aldi were selling electric sets a while ago for about £10 but i got mine ages ago off ebay for £20. Guest Posted January 15, 2011 Share Posted January 15, 2011 etching is a bit of a pain to be hoonest, the stencils are really fiddly because you have to have a really good seal on them or the acid leaks underneath and the whole thing's ruined. I'm preferring the engraving, it takes longer but I think gives a better result but you can practice and see what works for you. I use armour etching cream, rub n etch and over n over stencils.
