Need help to make up my mind about henhouse

Recommended Posts

I have had my second-hand classic and 3 Light Sussex since July/August last year. I am very pleased with it, however, the original plan of having it on the lawn and moving it around the garden was not very practical. A fox was visiting every night and digging holes in my lawn around the eglu house. I moved the whole thing to a more permanent concrete patio and laid woodchip in the run and weighted the extended run with concrete slabs. I have covered the run with plastic corrugated roofing panels. All has been fine, apart from rain running off patio and making floor a bit soggy sometimes.

I am planning to have a WIR built in the spring but keep changing my mind about the plans. :wall:

Should I keep eglu classic as henhouse (in the WIR) OR

Should I convert my old hardwood beach hut (5ft x 5ft) and build the run on to it. This would give the chickens more inside space in bad weather.

I think my dilemma is that, as I know I have a fox who visits, will the wooden shed be as fox-proof as the eglu.

Any advice to help me decide would be great - at the moment it keeps going round and round my little brain !!!

Hmm  . I think I'd convert the hut but keep the eglu too! Handy for an extra nesting box or a sick bay (or for introductions  ). If you converted the hut but then found foxes attempting to get into it, at least you'd have the eglu on standby.

I remember that "brain twirling" - I had many a sleepless night trying to plan my WIR  .
