Calling all Araucana owners...

Recommended Posts

What are your araucanas like? Fizz started laying on 25th February and laid reasonably consistently (1 every other day) until a few weeks ago when she stopped and started acting strangely. I wasn't sure whether she was broody or had a stuck egg so gave her the heat treatment to her belly. She promptly laid one egg followed by another 2 days later. But now nothing for 6 days. And she's acting quite normally. A grand total of 29 eggs.

Are yours like this? I know they will not lay like the hybrids (and I wouldn't want her too) but please reassure me that I will get at least a few more eggs out of her this year! :anxious:

By the way, Bella the gold campine has laid an egg a day ever since she started  And has laid more than my gingernut over the same time :?

:? I'm not much help here, except just wondered if they freerange Snowy? Sometimes I've thought that mine were off lay & then found yet another new garden nest.

If they're always in the run, that was no help at all, & I don't have an araucana, much as I'd love one.

haven't had an egg off mine for a fortnight :?

Madame Bloolay has only laid one or two eggs a week since we got her but when our wyandott got broody, Bloo came out in sympathy

she's a very happy little hen though.....charges about like roadrunner making delightful 'peep peep' noises. She's eating and drinking and being generally chickeny so I'm not too worried.

should I be?

I've got an araucan a cross and she has made nests in the garden, also one nest I found was on the bank next to our house outside the garden, she had popped out daily and I found 6 egs neatly stock piled!

if you watch her you may see her pop off or look for well covered areas she might choose.

Good luck

BBx :D

I've got an araucana/sussex cross - I re-homed her last August and she was already about 2 years old. I've had an egg from her almost every day, apart from over the winter but still had one or 2 a week. She's back laying almost every day now, lovely pale blue eggs

Thanks everyone, reassuring as usual! :D . Hopefully she is just having a break! They do freerange and I've combed the garden looking for nests but none so far (I've checked all her 'regular' spots  ). She's quite happy in herself - sounds just like your description Tara :D Just good to know that others are similar. 8)
