We have got a go and are getting a 6x6x6 wir (getting quotes at the moment). It's on slabes at the moment and we use chopped straw in the run and shredded paper in the nest box. This seems to be working well. But I'm getting confused about what to put in the wir, was thinking asbiose( think i've spelt that wrong ) but was reading about it on omlet shop and they say for bedding . What would i use for wir and am i o.k to use shredded paper in nest box.Girls seem to like it.Please help me.

Use Aubiose everywhere,run,nest box,litter tray - its brilliant stuff & much better than chopped straw or paper shreds.

I use it in my walk in run,have done for ages & would never use anything else.

Wow, sound great stuff, even in nest box? How often do you change it in nest box/run?Can you use any horse bedding?

Aubiose is fab. I use it too. You can use pretty much any horse bedding, such as Easibed, Hemcore or Rapport.

Another vote for Aubiose. I tried a cheaper chopped hemp straw but it got damp much quicker so I was soon back to Aubiose! Just make your WIR rain-proof with a roof/guttering and protect the sides with clear PVC (off the roll from from Dunhelm Mill) or glass tarps (google tarpaflex). Keeps the cold and wind out too

But can you put it in nest box and how often would you change nest box/wir??

It is perfect in the nest box

Change it when it looks grubby.....I have 10 hens and do it once a week.

 

The run gets 3 or 4 times a year.

Aubiose used here - in WIR and trays; I just done a complete clean out of the WIR and it takes a full bale, the last time I did a full clearn out was between christmas and new year. The trays are poo picked daily and cleaned and re-aubiosed once a week.

I do use straw in the next box with a layer of Aubiose on bottom

and I use aubiose ih the run and Wilsons dust extracted chopped straw in the Eglus (all my ex bats snuggle (no rear roosting bars) the chopped straw is nice and soft
