Tiggy
I was searching for my Moms brother a while ago and found him, his daughter & I are now firm friends. Last week we both went to meet an elderly aunt who is lovely and remembers my Mom as a little girl and always wondered what had happened to her. My Moms family history is very sad and the family were separated by tragidy but now a generation on we all seem to have found one another again I would seem we are decended from a totally amazing Irish G Grandmother who survived enourmous hardship and Im sure would have been astounded and proud at how far we have all come

Seagazer
That's lovely. My mum has just found a cousin (mum's 70 this year) and its the only cousin she's ever had. They got in contact via me by Genes Reunited. I'm hoping they will meet up soon. Neither knew of the other. Very sad really to have gone through life without each other and having extended family. Mrs Webmuppet
I did my family tree a couple of years ago and found a whole new branch of my family I knew nothing about! I found my Grans siblings families, I have yet to meet them, my Mum has met them and is in regular contact by phone. It took quite a bit of doing to track them down but it was lovely to be able to solve a longstanding mystery ( my Gran never said much about her family except that one of her brothers was a jockey and that she was one of 7 children). It turns out my Great Grandfather was a right one for the 'laydees' married 4 times (at least one of those marriages was bigamous!) and had also lived with another lady! C&T
It's amazing how families have their "secrets" - I know there are a couple of mysteries in our family that it would be great to get to the bottom of! A friends family did some investigation, and found out that Uncles were in fact bothers or cousins, and then they also found some extra members that some people knew nothing about, although others did. A real mish mash! As you can imagine, caused a few issues at first as these people were all still living!
Seagazer
You can also find out things that put a different light onto things. We always knew that my Gt Grandfather died aged 27 ( )when my Nan was about 3 and we were told that her mum left and took her baby sister but left my Nan with the Dad's family. We thought this was very cruel and almost felt as if the Gt Grandmother must have been a horrible person. "Ooops, word censored!"ody ever heard from her again. I've just found out that she actually died only about 3 years after her husband (at only 32 ) (I say husband, I can't actually find a marriage certificate). So perhaps she was already ill (she died of diabetes). She may not have been able to cope with both the children, we've never found out what happened to the little sister so she may have been adopted. Its sad but I actually feel a bit better now that there could have been a reason for the abandonment.

I know what you mean, since finding out various things about my moms family & upbringing its easier to understand why she behaves the way she does. She is a very difficult woman who has caused so much strife but knowing more about her puts it into perspective. who knows how I would have behaved if I had been sent off to live with an aunt who did not want me because my mother was shut up in a psychy hospital dad on the booze older brother hanged and other brother disappeared into the army "there for the grace of god go I"
