Willow
In a moment of madness I signed up to run 5k Race for Life in July (with a skinny friend) This is going to be a challenge as I'm (mumbles inaudibly)kg's overweight and I doubt i could run to the end of the road right now. I thought I'd start by starting to walk 5k regularly and gradually start running bits of it. Has anyone else done something like this from a similar starting point ? and if so any advice ? The Dogmother
Yup I do it every year. Don't worry about it though, there will be plenty of walkers at each event and it's a great atmosphere. Well done for entering.
JillM
Good for you, Patricia! I did my first RFL last year and walked most of the way along with a lot of the other ladies. Although jogging on the downhill bits made me feel like I was at least trying. Don't worry, there are people of all abilities there. Just enjoy the day and bask in the warmth of a job well done. I am even less fit this year but will be doing it in two different places so I can walk with different friends. Have a good day!
Willow
I'm targeting being able to run the distance one of my brothers just donated - says he's donating for the amusement factor
chickencam
I am tempted to do this with my daughters. My OH did say a few years ago that if we did the Race For Life he would give up smoking, but only said this when it was too late to enter for that year and we were already doing something else that day. So I may try to call his bluff, after all that has to be a good reason to do the race. He is nearly 46 overweight and unfit so I worry about him I couldn't find how much the entry fee was on the website can anyone help with this? C&T
Has anyone else done something like this from a similar starting point ? and if so any advice ? Yes! Last year! And if I can - anyone can! In fact, 6 months later, I did my first 10km... I approached it by finding a very short route from the house (about 1km?) and trying to run that. I failed quite spectacularly at first! Could only run for a few mins, and then had to walk for a bit. But by doing the same route, I would try and run a bit further each time - try and reach the next tree or bend in the road - until I got right the way round. Then gradualy, I increased the distance. Would say you need to go out at least 3 times a week though - much less and you won't notice the improvements! Go for it!! (Oh, and get decent foot wear - worth it!)
