Blue Cochin - Boy or Girl?

Recommended Posts

This one was hatched early September last year. It was the runt of the litter so to speak, half the size of it's siblings, has knock knees but is finally catching up in size. It had four splash siblings, two boys and two girls. It was easy to tell them apart after a few weeks and the boys went to the great coop in the sky. Initially I thought the blue one was a girl due to it's size, then it looked quite boyish and now I'm just totally confused. S/he is incredibly shy and always hides from me. I managed to take these photos this morning with the zoom lense while s/he was trying to look inconspicuous right at the back of the garden under a massive buddleia, hence the branches in the way of some shots  What do you think?

As you know, I'm not very good at this and to make things worse I don't keep cochins. In fact to me he/she looks like a brahma  Anyway, legs look a bit long and strong (boy), tail looks like it might be pointing upwards (boy), comb is small (girl), can't see any swoopy saddle feathers (girl) in most of the pictures he/she just looks like a girl, but in the last 2 more boyish. I think I'm with you: Confused.com

 I'm glad we agree

Brahmas and Cochins are very similar, their combs are different though, Brahmas have a pea comb whereas Cochins have normal combs. I don't think Cochins heads look as strong, vulture like as the Brahmas. Maybe it's just my fierce Brahma girlies though
