Unsecure chicken perches

Yesterday afternoon in between gales I cleaned the duck and chicken houses out. However I forgot to shut them up for the night! They were protected my an electric fence thankfully. This morning I discovered that the ducks hadn't gone into their duck house, a chicken egg in the grass and 3 duck eggs and a dark chicken egg in the nest boxes. So the ducks looked very tired and laid where they could and my Cuckoo Marans must have laid her first egg.

 

I feel as though instead of punishing me for being naughty not locking them in they have rewarded me with eggs.

 

Always nice when a hen lays her first egg.

That was lucky for your girls, i'm glad they were ok.

One time, hubby went to see if there were any eggs in the egg hole but he didn't quite put the egg door on properly and it just sort of hung there. It stayed like that all night but fortunately nothing knocked if off and my girls were safe. So now i always give an extra tug at bedtime just to make sure.

What luck that all was well It's an easier slip to make than one would think. I know I'll do it one day too and lots of people on the forum have done it in the past. Nice girls to have given you all those eggs.

I remember we got distracted with decorating in the house and forgot to close the girls up until a good couple of hours after it had gotten dark. I remember that horrible sickening feeling when I realised. At least it makes us more conciencious about shutting them up properly now and we had a lucky escape.
