Changing from mash to pellets

Recommended Posts

Hi, my pullets are now 17 weeks old, I only have mash left from when I got them last week. When do you think I should change them over to pellets? What brands do you recommend and what age should I treat them with Marriages worm treatment pellets?

Apologies for all the questions?!!

On the pellets my choice would be Garvo layers pellets. They can be hard to find but almost all of the people that have used them rate them very highly. I understand they have a longer shelf life than most pellets also.

As to the worming I can't help you on that. I will be following your thread to find out for myself TBH.

I'd start moving them on to pellets now, mixing the mash in with them until that is all gone. If they sort through it and make a mess then leave them on the mash until its gone then put them on the pellets cold turkey (so to speak..) they will probably sulk but will get over it if you dont give in

As they are hybrids you could move them on to layers pellets rather than growers pellets as although its a bit early you'd never use a sack of growers before they start laying (I'd always recommend keeping pure breeds on growers pellets as long as possible though)

Alternatively move them on to layers mash. I do prefer pellets to mash as there is less mess and waste but many people feed mash with no problems at all and say it keeps the chooks occupied for longer - there is no real right or wrong between the two

I feed Garvo pellets
