VERY excited at the prospect of a proper flock, in a paddock, rather than a couple in the garden. So go on, tempt me with your favorite breeds - What shall I get?!

I'm looking for lots of eggs, maybe in a variety of colours to tempt sales from the garden gate (ok, i know i'm not going to make a mint from this!). Easy to look after & hardy hens. At the moment i'm not sure i'm up for breeding/hatching/broodiness but maybe in a year or so i'd be after a cockerel, but for now i'm going to stick with girls. But if we did start breeding it would be for home produced meat, so i was thinking about a dual purpose breed for at least some of them.

They're going to free range within an electric fence and i've got room for 10-12 in the recycled plastic ark. Further expansion will depend on saving up for more housing, but i'm far too lazy to deal with cleaning a wooden house

Any links to breeders/suppliers of POL in the West Wilts/North somerset area would be great too!

Lucky you though having a paddock. How about some welsummers for dark eggs or marans, legbar type for green, sussex for light eggs and meat.

Wiltshire Chickens is a good place to get quality pure breeds they are outside Bradford on Avon

 

Pure breeds will not lay over winter in most cases so if eggs are your main priority then hybrids would be your best bet

Oh I am that you have a whole paddock. There is a lady where I walk the dogs who has a paddock in which she has lots of roaming hens and at least three cockerels. I always look over the hedge and hope that'll be me one day.

How about a Bluebell? Very pretty, large so meaty a hybrid so will lay lots of , and also sweet and friendly.

I thought my OH didn't but he has given me permission but I have no room.

 

Last time I told him I was going into town Christmas shopping Well I did for 10 mins before driving down to Northampton to get them.
