buying second hand eglus. advice please.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any experience of buying eglus second hand.

I'm wanting a classic, but would appreciate some advise on what to look out for, what is a good buy? and a good price? and has anyone had any bad experiences of buying second hand?

Is buying new and the customer service from omlet worth the extra expense?

thanks for your help.

I have one bought from new and one which I think, was third hand to me. Both are absolutely the same. The only advantage of the new one is that Omlet came and set it all up for me, which as a newbie was nice. I didn't get my chooks from them so that wasn't an issue. By the time I bought the second one, I knew how to put it together myself.

I would go and see any second hand one first of course, before you buy, but eglus ( and cubes) are very hard wearing so stand the test of time. If some bits are missing e.g. run clips or the roosting bars are wood, you can get spares and upgrades very reasonably from Omlet. In my experience, Omlet are very helpful in keeping the old ones going. I think I'd say go for a Mk 2 rather then the Mk1, because I think there is a reduced list of spares for the Mk1.

i got 4 now and all but 1 ive had second hand i got my cube from the sale board on here for about £450 with loads of extras , my orange mark 2 classic from ebay for £100 ,my GO recon from omlet about £250 ish i think i try to block out what ive spent lol

and my newest addition to the omlet village is a red mark1 classic that i got from ebay for the grand total of £67

im just as happy with my second hand ones and as you can see i have saved a fortune on my set up

you can get them cheap sometimes on ebay but you have to be prepared to take a risk , my orange classic that i got for a buy it now of £100 didnt have a photo and said that it had a small amount of damage i took a gamble and brought it ,the damage turned out to be 1 corner of the run had been bent by being hit by a mower so i bent it back and its done me just fine

my red mark1 was £67 from ebay because the seller had listed it as a elggloo so no one else found it

eglus are bult to last and maintenece free so there really isnt much difference between new and second had ,apart from the new ones are harder to put together because the clips are new and really stiff lol

Go for a Mark 2 for the reason given above - otherwise, nothing really to look out for. The bits on an Eglu that get lost or wear out are things like plastic clips, washers etc which are very cheap to replace. Generally speaking Eglus don't wear out, fade or deteriorate. Older versions might have plastic bolts, or wooden roosting bars but they're easily upgraded. They might also not have the mesh squares that protect the edges of the run where it meets the Eglu, but you can buy them from the Omlet shop.

I bought a classic mark 2 from the 'eglu for sale' section on this site. It was £260. It's great. It was far away but I was lucky to be in that area shortly after purchasing it. It had 2 screws missing which I bought in b&q for 90p. I also bought a new cube from omlet. That's great too. I decided to get a new one because of the fact I wouldn't have to collect and assemble and I only have a small car! Good luck finding one nearby.
