Grub and glug versus traditional feeders/ drinkers.

Recommended Posts

In my view there is no contest, grub and glugs every time. The water stayed clean, not blocked up by chickens flinging dirt about, no knocked over food spilling all over. I hang mine a different heights so big and little chooks can reach I just top the food up each week and replace the water as needed. I can confidently level them for the weekend knowing they will have enough food and drink, I couldn't do this will my plastic waterer and feeders.

I like the grub but i've actually abandoned my grub for a round hanging feeder. It has fins in so they do not flick food, 4 hens can feed together from any angle. It also has a hat so that water can't get on the food. Also, when full with pellets it lasts 3 days for 4 hens, and the gravity action means the old food is at the bottom as you fill it from the top.

I think that the fixing hooks on the grub would be too big to fit in weld mesh. I read that people have used the small Omlet run panel squares to fix on to weld mesh somehow, or made a rail somehow.

I do use a superglug which is brilliant as it holds loads of water. It does get bits In, but doesn't get blocked like other drinkers ive had.

I use both a Grub and a Glug and love their jolly colour. (Mine are pink). Omlet used to do a wire contraption that enabled those without Omlet runs to use grubs and glugs, and I was going to put a link for you on here, but I can't seem to find it now. I have one and it really does the trick. Before getting this contraption, I tried to adapt a Grub/Glug set so they could hook onto non Omlet wire but though ok for the Glug, it did not work for the Grub as my adaptations tilted it too much and the chooks had difficulty getting into it.

The Grub and Glug won't fit onto weldmesh, so you'll have to adapt - if you look on the WIR threads you'll see some options, the Ikea Kroken rails are a perfect size, but there are other methods.

I love the Grub and Glub matching colours but I have given up and got a circular gravity feeder, and I find it much easier to fill - it holds plenty for my four hens for a weekend. I've been lent a galvanised metal drinker, and again I find that a lot easier to clean and fill - I stand both of these on a round of wood about 2" thick, and that's just enough to stop the hens kicking bark into it, although next time I can get to a DIY store I'm going to buy some thin chain and hang them from the roof in future.
