Pip off her legs ANOTHER UPDATE

Recommended Posts

This morning went to let the chooks out and pip could'net walk she was compeltey off her legs :( phoned her vets up and took her straight down we thought the worse and thought she would have to be pts :( . But the vet said that she has had a crop problem and adter her op it takes time for everything to get her gut back to normal as she has'nt been digesting the nutrients she needs and suggested us giving her phyiso as her drumsticks so to speak have no muscle on them and try and get her walking as she is eating and drinking still and otherwise looks very healthy, she has been doing runny droppings since before the op and afterwards but of course the day of the vets she has done perfect droppings. Has anyone had any simliar experiences advice would be greatly appreciated.

The vet said give her time and she how she is in herself but if no improvement we would have to think of having her pts

Is she eating and drinking?

Yeah she is eating and drinking, she's abit stonger today and has had a little walk around :) bless her she is really trying :) i have also given her some extra oyster shell after reading a sticky on lameness and limping. She has improved abit but have had to seperate her as her friend kept pecking at her and i was'nt having that :x

I just hope she continues to improve the vet said to get her moving about more to improve her muscles how often should i keep going out as i don't want to push her too much

You could add some lifeguard to her food or water. It is a good tonic and contains glucosamine. Keeping her moving within moderation will stop her muscles wasting, and improve her circulation.

ok thanks i will order some today, she is having herban at the mintue is this any good for her?

So far so good Pip is improving she is up more on her legs now :D , have been giving her oyster shell/grit and also baked some of the chooks shells and gave her them, she is still sepearted from Daisy at the minute won't put them back together till she's back on her legs properly, as daisy can be a right handful :x i do let them fr together and there has been no problems there with daisy or the other two hens. I guess it's just going to take time but it was nice seeing her come running out the run for food today, i am just :pray::pray: she makes a full recovery

Thankyou, the lifeguard arrived today so have stopped the herban and give her this in the water as don't want to overload her too much. Also the limestone flour arrived today, how often and how much do you give :?: i have noticed she is loads better on her feet but had to pop out today so they could'net fr, have noticed that she does sitdown more in her run but when out runs around like nothings up :? on saying that now looking out the window at her she is standing up in the run and walking round, sometimes i feel the more i watch her the more worried i get.

As the vet said the problem was as she had impacted crop and her op the nutrients were'nt getting into her what food other than pellets, mash would be good for her :?:

Sorry so many questions

Re the limestone flour, just give enough to coat the pellets, Roughly a tablespoonful per grub. If you coat the pellets lightly with olive oil, the limestone flour will stick to the pellets instead of ending up at the bottom of the grub.

Having found the best vet ever.com, she explained to me that what are often mistaken as impacted crops are merely where the hen is ill. Due to their basic intestinal system everything further up the chain shuts down until the problem is solved - hence the crop will stay full until things further "down the line" moves on. My hen had what appeared to be an impacted crop and I did all the things recommended on here - maggots, oil, massages, all for nothing.

Once the hen had been treated for her infection with antibiotics (sterile peritonitis), the crop finally emptied after 5 days and she was back to normal. Of course, that was only because the rest of her body had returned to its normal cycle. The vet said impacted crops are rarely as they seem......

she had her impacted crop before which kept happening so she was operated on by a chicken specalist and he got the blockage out, the vet said because the gut shut down cause of lack of food it takes time for it to get back to normal :)
