Chortle Chook

Could she have been wrongly labelled?

Recommended Posts

At the Reading banty show I bought two chooks (now called 'Dozer' and 'Digger') labelled clearly as 'Blue Laced Wyandotte'. However they look brown & white to me, all be it very pretty. The white looks rather greyish and I was going to give them a bath but my OH says he thinks this is what the 'blue' bit is. Could he be right? I haven't got a photo but they look rather like the picture on Charlotte Popescu's book Best Hens for You. I've looked through various books and can't seem to see a picture of a so called 'Blue laced' hen. In fact chook books as a rule are not very good at showing the various patterns. Quite a few show you individual feathers with 'barring' etc. but I haven't yet found one that says 'this is what lacing looks like on the hen'

This site has lots of photos of Wyandotte colours:

They list the bird on the book you linked as Blue-laced Red...but I think more commonly it's just called blue-laced...

Thanks for that link. Judging by this I have 'buff laced Wyandottes' which would make a lot more sense :)

The hen on the book in the first post is a blue laced hen (blue laced is the UK term, the name blue laced red is used in the US for the same colour)

Those feathersite pics are very good - it sounds like you have some grubby or off colour buff laced!

As well as being colours in their own right both buff laced and gold laced are 'unwanted' colours bred by blue laced breeding groups (thats why blue laced are so sought after as only a percentage of chicks will be blue laced) so your two were probably from such a breeding group so labelled as blue laced as thats what the parents were (pretty daft really)

A specifically bred buff laced is a rich red and snowy white

Wyandottes are all lovely though :D

Many thanks, Redwing. This all makes sense now. As you say they are nice girls all be it clearly not for show. When it gets warmer I will give them a bath to see if they come up a bit whiter but I think that they will always have a slightly grubby sheen even when they haven't been digging and buldozing. :)
