Just got home and my electric hen is not working - the chicks are OK but what shall I do ? It's a Brinsea

I'd try a desk lamp with a traditional bulb in it, they give off a lot of heat :hugs:

I agree, an anglepoise sort of lamp would do - a 60w or 100w bulb depending on how high it is above the chicks

 

Failing that and if you are desperate and willing to drive to me I have a spare heat lamp at the moment

Thanks again Debs and Tasha Sorry had a slight panic, I have put a desk lamp in now but how far away from the bulb should the chicks be? They have been eating and drinking but are now making quite a lot of noise so have added a hot water bottle. Em had offered me a spare hen too but I am going to try Thornes first thing in the morning to see if they have a lamp They are 3 weeks today and quite big feathered chicks so hope they will be OK

If they are in a cluster under the lamp then thay are too cool, if they are right away from the lamp they are too hot...so you need something inbetween

If its a 40 or 60w bulb then have it quite close, about 12-16 inches at the most

 

A 100w have it about 18 inches above

 

As already said, look to see how the chicks react and adjust accordingly

The desk lamp is only 20W and that's all I have. I remembered the snugglesafe though so they have that too. They are sitting under the light preening and pooing on the hot water bottle cover.

Energy saving bulbs are great...most of the time

It's an ikea lamp with a tiny little bulb - I'll try and think of something else

Just get it as close to them as is safe, and maybe put a box or something round the chicks to keep out the draughts?

Have now used an Ikea standard lamp with bendy angelpoise smaller lamp coming off it - this is 40W so have that directing pointing into brooder. The chicks think it's great fun being up late

I have managed to get the hen to work by using the plug from my incubator The chicks were fine this am, I reheated the snugglesafe at 5.30 and they are currently enjoying a pile of mealworms

If it's working with another plug, it's probably just the fuse which has gone in the plug? Glad you've got it working again!

Yes but because they are closed plugs you can't change the fuse I've had about 5 hours sleep

That really annoys me! You've got it working at the moment which is good, you could always cut the plug off the faulty one and strip back the wires a bit and put a traditional plug on? Might be worth a try. Failing that, you may be able to get a replacement flex for it?

it's not a plug it's a transformer the brooder only opperates on 12volts

Wheatcroft Poultry who I got it from on ebay are sending a replacement plug and adaptor today Very nice to deal with and prompt service
