teacake Posted March 20, 2011 Share Posted March 20, 2011 We're still working on our WIR but the end may be in sight soon, so I really need to choose where to get the chickens from. Problem is there's no where that near to us. How far would you travel? Would you go once to all the places to check them out, or just go and collect? There one place about 20 miles away, one that's been recommended about 40 miles away (but only has 3 breeds) and a bigger place about 45 miles away? help please. We've been recommended a breeder in Haydon Bridge but he only has 4 breeds ( 3 really as I dont think the white stars will be suitable for beginners/our garden) I saw an advert for somewhere in Morpeth, but the best I've seen looks to be Durham Hens, which is quite a long way, but I'd go if I knew it was worth it. Purplemaniacs Posted March 20, 2011 Share Posted March 20, 2011 I travelled about 25 miles (each way) to get some of mine, the first time I went with the intention of buying two which we did, the place had been talked about on the forum, so I was confident about buying from there, I went back two years later to get another four. Next Sunday I am doing a round trip of 120 miles to get three ex batts from Brackley If you ask on here about the places you are thinking of, there will probably be some Omleteers that have already visited them, who could give you advice about specific places. Sammiboo Posted March 20, 2011 Share Posted March 20, 2011 I bought my first two 43 miles away from a breeder, they only had one breed ready to go, the rest were going to be ready two weeks later. Impressed with her set up I collected two more. Last weekend I did a 500 mile round trip to collect some hens whose farm was closing and would go to slaughter if not homed! Next month 200 mile round trip to collect ex batts. I think it depends on the person to how far to travel! I think nothing of driving long distance. Yesterday, we went 40/45 miles to a place, but decided not to get any there, put there was another poultry place on the way back luckily. We had some ex-batts from Essex (75 miles). Then we collected two brahmas from a forum member near Oxford (188 miles). Good job hubby is understanding.
