Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

We are now in week 3 of our chicken keeping and all going well.

 

We are off on holiday at the end of April for a week and so are considering leaving them with a local breeder who also does chicken sitting.

 

He's charging £1.50 per chicken per night. Reasonable ?

 

Also, he has offered to worm them (that would be £2 per night instead) with flubuvent (sp?) as well. As we've only had them 3 weeks is this something we should consider ? I am not sure how often it needs doing but we are on hols again in June so could I wait till then & get it done ? Or is it better to do it ourselves ?

 

Is there anything else I should ask him ? I was planning to leave them with him a couple of days earlier than our holiday, to give me a chance to give the coop a through clean & dry out before we go on hols.

Flubenvet does a good job - you can buy a pot of it for between £15-£25 (depending on size and strength) and that will last you a couple of years

 

I wouldnt have them done personally, the move to a sitter will most likely upset their tummies as it is

I agree with Redwing, I would worm them yourself as doing them whilst slightly stressed by the move is not a good idea. With the price of a pot of Flubenvet it is cheaper and very easy to do them yourself, you'll have to buy a pot at some point anyway. Don't know about the price of sitting though so can't help with that one

To help your price comparison, I have found a local farm / breeder who charge 50p per bird per night. Not quite sure what the arrangements are regarding accommodation, but thought this might help!

Personally speaking I would like any hens staying with me wormed before they came,to stop the risk of cross infection

If it's any help for comparison the lady that bred my girls are having them for their holidays and she charges £1 per chicken per night.

We pay £5 per night for up to 4 hens in an eglu with extended 3m run when we go away. It's a lovely place which breeds and sells chickens and has a hen holiday area set up with eglus and cubes.

£1.50 per night seems about the average to me. Not sure if the sitter is on safe ground legally speaking by offering to administer treatment tbh.
