Worming & chicken sitting question

Recommended Posts

We are now in week 3 of our chicken keeping and all going well.

We are off on holiday at the end of April for a week and so are considering leaving them with a local breeder who also does chicken sitting.

He's charging £1.50 per chicken per night. Reasonable ?

Also, he has offered to worm them (that would be £2 per night instead) with flubuvent (sp?) as well. As we've only had them 3 weeks is this something we should consider ? I am not sure how often it needs doing but we are on hols again in June so could I wait till then & get it done ? Or is it better to do it ourselves ?

Is there anything else I should ask him ? I was planning to leave them with him a couple of days earlier than our holiday, to give me a chance to give the coop a through clean & dry out before we go on hols.

Flubenvet does a good job - you can buy a pot of it for between £15-£25 (depending on size and strength) and that will last you a couple of years

I wouldnt have them done personally, the move to a sitter will most likely upset their tummies as it is

I agree with Redwing, I would worm them yourself as doing them whilst slightly stressed by the move is not a good idea. With the price of a pot of Flubenvet it is cheaper and very easy to do them yourself, you'll have to buy a pot at some point anyway. Don't know about the price of sitting though so can't help with that one :D

We pay £5 per night for up to 4 hens in an eglu with extended 3m run when we go away. It's a lovely place which breeds and sells chickens and has a hen holiday area set up with eglus and cubes.

Where abouts are you - I'm exploring options in the Midlands at the moment?
