Disinfectant to use on soil?

Recommended Posts

Hello all

Please does anyone know if there is a disinfectant that is safe for chickens if used on soil?

We started keeping bantams last autumn but sadly lost several to some kind of wasting disease. The vet said that it was probably a virus that they had picked up from wild birds in our garden. She advised leaving it for 3 or 4 months before we got any new hens (that was in January).

We would like to get some new ones in the summer as our remaining two are healthy but a bit lost without the others. We realise that we can't sterilise the whole garden but would like to find a product to at least disinfectant the corner that they use as an enclosed run while we're at work. We've got some Bi-OO-Cyst to use on the coop but this just refers to 'walls, floors and posts' on the label so doesn't seem suitable for soil.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Sorry to hear about your losses.

I use Stalosan. A pink powder that gets scattered around the run whenever we do a big clear out, removing all the old bedding and putting in new. Not sure if it would be effective for your particular situation and if it would kill you particular nasties? Hopefully someone else will be able to help more!

Garden Lime is a great tip too as then I CAN use it all over the garden. We ordered some Stalosan last night and will pick up some lime too at the weekend. We thought if we start a disinfectant regime now, and do it several times over the next few months, it will give new ones the best chance later in the summer.

Thank you!
