Miss Moneypenny
Hello, One of my girls is just sitting in the nest looking sleepy, I don't know how long she has been there but the other hens have laid during the day. I can tell there is a problem! Under her the nest was very wet and so are her feathers at her rear. I have felt around her vent which is soft but I really don't know how to tell if she has an egg stuck? I have given her some nutri-drops and put her back on a clean nest. She last laid an egg 4 days ago and has been more erratic and we are getting less eggs then usual in the last 2 weeks . She tends to lay quite large eggs too. Had her since last May when she was point of lay... anyone any suggestions??? Thanks
Henslaved
When you say wet, was it more like the consistency of egg white?
Miss Moneypenny
It was soaked into the wood shavings but I would make a guess at egg white yes...
Henslaved
Hmmmmm sounds like an egg could have broken whilst she was trying to lay it. If she hasn't passed the shell it will need to be removed (all of it). Hope that's not the case though as I've heard it can be a tricky job. Somone with more expertise will be along soon I'm sure. Plum
My Pigeon frequently has soft and broken eggs. Usually Grackle (the midwife) helps her deliver the membrane/shell which terrifies me in case she pecks her bum so if I get there first I use a gloved finger and water to feel inside her and sweep round to remove all the broken shell and membrane. I hold her vertically to help all the egg drain out first. It may not be broken though. I found with one of mine that had trouble laying she had loads of lubricant but you will find out if you feel inside her. Good luck.
Miss Moneypenny
So you don't think it could be Peritonitus? I will give the finger a go later.... She is up and out with the others just a bit slower and not feeling like eating, have seen her drink some water though... Just wish it wasn't cold and rainey out... Miss Moneypenny
Hi, Have checked the nest and she has passed a soft shell egg quite funnel shaped. She is pecking about and eating treats more normally but looks like she has lost weight, very mucky bottom too... Will keep a close eye on her.... Thanks
Egluntyne
Might be worth worming her as she has a mucky bum.

Miss Moneypenny
Me too... at least there is nothing stuck... Will make her some nice porriage with plenty of crushed eggshell and DE powder when I get home. Will get some flubenvet as that seems to be the recommended wormer used. thanks for your quick replies!
