Poorly Hen and I dont know what to do!

Hi Omleteers

 

I have a Bluebelle which Ive had for 2 weeks, along with 4 other hybrids.

 

I picked her up to give her a cuddle today and she really didnt like it, lots of flapping and squwarking. I put her down after about 30 seconds and she flapped and hit the WIR fence. Not hard but she landed in the corner.

 

After this episode, she visited the oyster grit bowl, her tail is down and she looks poorly. She is keeping seperate from the others and doesnt look well. I rang my supplier and said I didnt know if she had an impacted/sour crop as she was looking hunched and bulbous round the crop area (but not tennis ball sized, more ping pong). She said to pour some olive oil down her beak then hold her by her legs to make her sick. We did this and nothing has happened, the crop didnt feel full nor squishy really.

 

She is now in the corner of the WIR and I'm worried that she is either ill (and I dont know what to do) or I just frightened her after the cuddle. Please help!!

I would check her crop in the morning it'll have something in it during the day which is normal. If its still full then I would start looking at that. She may just have been winded after hitting the run.

 

I would let her rest until morning then have a good look at her before she goes out in the run. Just check her crop and her breathing. Put you ear on her back and listen for wheezing and crackles. I would check her wings and legs for injury just in case. Feel both side comparing them. Look at her face and check for runny nose or eyes. Check her vent for any signs of parasites and problems and let us know how you get on. You'll be champion chicken holder then.

 

When you pick her up keep a hand over each wing then hold her gently against you so you can pin a wing to you and release a hand to feel her. Good luck.

Thank you so much Plum and Stacey, I checked her more or less every half hour after the event and she appeared much better. :D She was sitting alone in a corner for about half an hour, then came out and into the run with the others until bedtime. She had some water and pellets and just to double check, I gave them all some mixed corn. She is quite low on the pecking order anyway but I made sure the other girls were busy and threw some seperately for Bubbles. She ate what she wanted and seemed OK!!

 

I will check her over though and let you know, thank you again, I turned into a loony for a bit, very worrying!!
