Ski Holiday Advice Needed - Bulgaria?

Recommended Posts

Little Miss Webmuppet has decided that she would like to go on a skiing holiday ( Mr W & I used to ski before LMW came along). Now we would be on very tight budget (around £2000 for 2 adults & one 11 year old) . I went to the travel agents and got a few brochures, it looks as though we could probably just about manage a trip to Bulgaria.

Has anyone been to Bulgaria?

I've read a few reviews and now I'm even more confused.I know the food won't be all that great and the hotels will be a little dated. I quite liked the sound of Borovets as the transfer is quite short.

So lovely Omleteers what do I do?

I should add that when Mr W & I used to ski , Bulgaria wasn't really on the the skiing map.

A group of us went to Bulgaria (Pamperovo ) skiing some years ago the skiing was fantastic brilliant choice of runs for all levels very friendly people yes the hotels are very dated and the food not very adventurous lots of pork dishes I would liken it to Youth Hostel standards of probably 15 years ago but we all loved it our whole weeks ski package was £85 and that was everything lift passes, lessons ski & boot hire :!: Vodka,Whiskey, Gin were all £1.50 a bottle I bet it's not that now though I would definately go back there. The following year we went to Romania (Brashov ) not as poor as Bulgaria the hotels and food were better but the runs were not as good and we found the romanians miserable in comparrison strange as they were better off. If you do decide to go take your own loo roll (Vital ) there toilets outside of the hotel should be avoided if possible I still shudder at the thought of them

I went to Pamperovo 4 years ago and was very disappointed. Very little snow, no cheaper for food etc when there and very limited runs. TBH with that sort of budget you should be ok for France or similar - me and OH go to Morzine and manage a week there for under £1000 and that was driving which is more expensive. If you have a self catering chalet it's not overly expensive at all. Bulgaria can be quite hit and miss so possibly not the best first experience if LMW hasn't been before. Sorry to not be more positive.....

Having spoken to one of the holiday companies it would seem that February half term is already pretty much booked up  . I think I may wait and see if any cheap deals come up nearer the time. I have skied in France, Switzerland and Austria in the past so I know what to expect there. LMW and I have some kit from when we went to Lapland plus last winter we bought ski anoraks and salopettes just before all that snow
