Mass Break-in... into my garden!

Recommended Posts

'My' garden is a part of the garden that is sectioned off; so the chickens cant get in there, and so i can grow plants (including strawberries and raspberries :')). This morning, I noticed (white chicken)PP in there, so I rushed out to get them out. When I got out, I noticed there were 4 in there! Thats the first time the new ones have got in. About every 2 hours, they've been getting in, and after each time, I thought I stopped them. First it was between the bamboo canes (that are attached to netting, so I can get in), then in was underneath. Finally, the jumped over the netting, then a box hedge, then a chair, and then a table when they came out (I used mealworms to get them out!).

It looks like we'll have to invest more money into a better protection...

I am in a similar situation, having decided I wanted a bit of my small garden chicken free. I put expanding trellis up, they jumped over. I put it higher 6ft, they 'flew' off the top of the eglu. I put canes and netting around the eglu, one managed to still fly over. I have now made the netting a bit higher, I'm not going to make the trellis higher as the 'humans only (and cat)' bit already feels a bit like a prison! I have come to the conclusion that if they want to get in they will. Had similar performance last year creating a veggie patch; used a fruit cage in the end. Although they haven't got in for a while I know they will. But I have got grass again now and I will protect it!! Good luck, at least they keep our brains active and challenged.

It seems they always think the grass is greener on the other side. Even when it isn't. Mine have been on woodchip all winter and I moved them back to their grassy quarters at the beginning of the month - one or two keep hopping over the fence to the woodchip ......

Too funny. They are little sneaky chickens. I dont know about you guys across the pond, but I do raised beds over here in the US. I found popup netting that goes around the beds that encloses them at a gardening supply company (www.gardeners.com if you want to take a peek at them.. just search for pop-up nets.. to see if you can find something similar where you guys are). Works like a champ.
